Lorraine Carthew

Lorraine’s background is in fashion and design. After a successful career in designing and producing her own fashion label, she turned to textile art and quilting. Her first quilts were traditional appliqué, but she was soon looking to design her own style of quilting. Portraits of Sir Donald Bradman, RM Williams and JF Kennedy in 1in squares were the outcomes. She has now been producing prize-winning quilts for 10 years. Magazine articles on her different styles have been extensively published.

She was asked to write a book on her Mosaic Appliqué by the American Quilter’s Society and this will be published and released in 2007. In her 10 years of quilting Lorraine has been recognised both in Australia and internationally with prize-winning quilts achieving three Best of Show, four Best Use of Colour, and five Viewer’s Choice Awards with the Viewer’s Choice Awards being the ones most valued by her, as she feels they show acceptance by her fellow quilters.

When Lorraine isn’t working on a new quilt she can be found writing magazine articles, judging at quilt shows, or teaching one of her unique styles of quilting.

Liz Scobie

Liz trained in the early 1970s as a Textile and Design teacher. She taught in NSW high schools before retiring in 1980 to raise her two children and devote more of her time to her love of the textile arts.

Initially textile arts took centre stage, with the focus on creative machine embroidery. Producing a series of wall hangings and a range of machine-embroidered silk clothing, which she supplied to major galleries around Australia.

In 1993 she decorated a series of painted timber platters turned by her husband Neil. These were to be a ‘one off’ for a special exhibition. In the years that followed Neil and Liz worked on many collaborative pieces for special exhibitions and produced a range of painted platters, bowls and screens, which sold in galleries throughout Australia and the USA. The woodworking business gradually consumed more and more of her time, leaving less time for textiles. One of the highlights of this time were the three visits to Ayers Rock Resort, as artists in resident with husband Neil. Accompanied by their children, these visits were very enlightening professionally.

Liz now lives at Lower Bucca, a small rural community not far from Coffs Harbour in NSW. She teaches creative machine-embroidery workshops from her studio as well as teaching all over Australia.

In recent times she has enjoyed the chance to spend more time experimenting with creative machine embroidery. This work includes a lot of three-dimensional techniques combining fibres, threads and yarns using free-motion embroidery and water-soluble fabrics.

Renaissance Roses - 1 day workshop – All skill levels - BOOK ONLINE NOW

Created exclusively for Quilt Indulgence Festival 2008, Mariya has taken two of the smaller roses from her award-winning Renaissance Revival quilt into this delightful small wallhanging.

The piece is constructed by sewing machine using Mariya’s Turned-Edge Appliqué by Machine method. This technique is gaining in popularity and you will love Mariya’s modern method of turning the edges of the appliqué shapes over a semi soluble stabiliser.

When the completed work is washed the stabiliser virtually disappears. The stitching used is a very fine zigzag stitch that is far easier to master than satin stitch and leaves the shapes with soft, turned edges similar to hand appliqué. This method is easy to learn and creates a beautiful finish to your project.

You will get to create the stems and roses and then machine stitch on the stems and a leaf and
turn the edges of some of the flowers during this one day workshop.

Mariya will give you guidance on how to finish your piece at home, including the outer border, and instructions will be discussed and supplied.
